At the end of a last attempt in which the two McLaren pilots gave everything, it was Oscar Piastri who signed the pole position of the Spanish Grand Prix before Lando Norris.
Oscar Piastri takes the ascendancy on Lando Norris. While the two McLaren pilots were tied in the exercise of the qualifying session since the start of the season before rallying Montmelo, the Australian was able to be stronger to seek pole position of the Spanish Grand Prix.
After a first attempt that had seen the Briton ahead of 17 thousandths of seconds, partly thanks to the small aspiration taken in the straight line of the stands, Oscar Piastri has put everything end to end. Indeed, signing the record for the three sectors of the Catalan route, the McLaren driver completed his best lap in 1’11”546.
Less at ease in the central part of the circuit, Lando Norris bows to 209 thousandths of a second in what is the least tight qualifications session since the start of the 2025 fiscal year. Behind this first line 100% Orange Papaya, Max Verstappen gave a last kidney stroke to seek third place but he concedes three tenths of seconds to the reference mark.
Gasly and Hadjar reached Q3
George Russell achieved the same time as the quadruple world champion in 1’11”848. But, the Mercedes pilot having produced him after his rival, he must be satisfied with fourth place. Lewis Hamilton also managed to raise the glove to sign the fifth time in front of his replacement at Mercedes Andrea Kimi Antonelli and his teammate at Ferrari Charles Leclerc. On the tricolor side, Pierre Gasly and Isack Hadjar gave everything in their last attempt but the Alpine pilot could not do better than eighth in front of the Racing Bulls team.
For Esteban Ocon, this qualifying session was like the start of the weekend in Barcelona. At the wheel of a haas in a shifty of performance, the Frenchman was eliminated from the Q1 with the 17th time. A session which was also complicated for Yuki Tsunoda, which finished last at the end of the first segment and will have to start this Sunday from the last line. A Spanish Grand Prix which promises to be complicated with tires that are difficult to survive on long relays, promising a race for two stops.
