Long -term contract for Canada

A few days after the coronation of George Russell (Mercedes) before Max Verstappen (Red Bull) and Kimi Antonelli (Mercedes), F1 announced the extension of the Grand Prix of Canada. The Gilles-Villeneuve route will be at the calendar at least until 2035.

George Russell and Mercedes had to smile when he learned the news. Two short days after the success of the German stable with the British pilot in Montreal in front of Verstappen and Antonelli, Formula 1 announced on Tuesday, the contract extension of the Grand Prix of Canada. The new lease now extends until 2035.

“While Formula 1 celebrates its 75th anniversary, it is completely suitable that we announce an extension with the Canada Grand Prix, proudly launched Stefano Domenicali, the boss of the F1. A race that has an incredible story in our sport and bears the name of a real legend in the person of Gilles Villeneuve. As a reminder, the Canada Grand Prix has been on the calendar since 1978 and takes place on the Gilles-Villeneuve route in Montreal.

What about Europe

This announcement should please fans of the North American circuit. If it is generally appreciated by everyone, many should question, in parallel, about the future of European traces. As indicated in our columns, recently, F1 published the calendar 2026 and it revealed the disappearance of Imola in Émilie-Romagne. As the team notes, Europe represented 69% of the calendar in the 1980s and 1990s and then 55% in the 2000s and less than 40% today. In 2026, the pilots will last for the last time in Barcelona and Zandvoort while the Grand-Prix de Belgique will compete every other year, with races in 2027, 2029, 2031 but not in 2028 and 2030.
