Framed against Biniam Girmay after the intermediate sprint of the second stage of the Tour de France, Jonathan Milan apologized to the Eritrean as soon as the finish line crossed.
This Sunday the second stage of the Tour de France, with an accident profile, smiled at Mathieu Van der Poel (Alpecin-Deceuninck), winner in the sprint in front of Tadej Pogacar (Uae Team Emirates). No double for Jasper Philipsen (Alpecin-Deceuninck), nor of first success for the 2024 green jersey, Biniam Girmay (Intermarché-Wanty). He lived a delicate day. Victim of a technical failure, the latter was forced to change bikes in the last kilometers. Previously, he also saw Jonathan Milan (Lidl-Trek) dominate him in the intermediate sprint of Enocq where as soon as the line was crossed, The Italian poured his anger over the Eritrean.
In view of the images of the sprint, nothing seemed irregular on the part of Biniam Girmay. Nevertheless, Jonathan Milan shouted in his direction, making great gestures of anger, undoubtedly criticizing him for having embarrassed him. A blow of blood immediately regretted however by the recent stage winner on the Critérium du Dauphiné. After the race in Boulogne-sur-Mer, The Italian caught up with the Eritrean before he got on the bus in his training. He addressed her apologies and stretched his hand. Without resentment, Biniam Girmay shook the hand of his rival. The time has been immortalized, the Intermarché-Wanty training notably published it on his account X.
Coquard and Penhoët took the beak
The incident is therefore closed. It is however not known if this is the case between Bryan Coquard (Cofidis) and Paul Penhoët (Groupama-FDJ). A few meters behind Jonathan Milan and Biniam Girmay, the two tricolor sprinters also exchanged words with vehemence. Unhappy, Bryan Coquard probably criticized the same grievances to his compatriot which clearly did not seem to be of the same opinion. Not preferring to drag on Bryan Coquard, Paul Penhoët continued his way, stirring the head of disagreement.
