Toronto police say they are looking for three men suspected of having participated in a shooting that injured at least 12 people in a pub in the Canadian city.
The masked armed men opened fire at Piper Arms Pub during his opening evening on Friday, according to the authorities. The attack was the last incident in an increase in years of armed violence in the North American country, which has prompted legislators to freeze the sale of certain firearms in recent years.
“They entered the bar. They produced their weapons and opened fire without discernment on people sitting inside the bar, “said police superintendent Paul Macintyre on Saturday.
Macintyre, which is part of the organized unit of the application of the crime, added that six of the victims have ball wounds that are not deadly. He added that the others had been injured by broken glass.
The motive for the shooting remained clear, the police said.
“Our investigation will tell us whether this ad has been targeted or not for a particular reason,” said Macintyre.
“Maybe someone was inside that someone didn’t like. Maybe someone had an ox with the company. We don’t know, ”he added.
The police officer told journalists that he had seen the surveillance video of the shooting bar, who showed people abandoning each other or falling to the ground after being struck.
“This is an act of reckless violence that has shaken our community and our city,” he said, adding that the police will not leave “no return stone” to find the suspects.
Toronto mayor Olivia Chow said on the X social media platform that she was “deeply troubled” to hear about the pub shoot and added that the police chief had assured that “all the necessary resources had been deployed”.
Violent crimes involving firearms have increased by 81% since 2009, according to the Canadian government.
In December 2022, five people were killed and another injured in a shooting in the suburbs of Toronto.
The increase in armed violence has encouraged the government to recently prohibit more types of handguns and other firearms.
In April 2020, a shooter disguised as a police officer killed 22 people in the eastern province of Nova Scotia, the worst mass shooting in Canada. The country has prohibited 1,500 types of military quality or assault-style firearms after the shooting in Nova Scotia.
