Sunday, July 20, the 1 p.m. newspaper invites you to discover the Audomarois marsh for a walk in the heart of the largest wetland in Hauts-de-France.

It is a mosaic of land and water with an area of 3,700 hectares and the largest wetland north of Paris: the Audomarois marsh. During the water, a crew of tourists will go back to the origins of the Marais to the Middle Ages. “This marsh, originally, it was rather a completely impracticable swamp, bristling with forests. And it is the man who shaped this territory, both to cultivate this rich, fertile land, and also to develop trade”explains Mélanie Candaës, guide at the Marais Maison in Saint-Omer (Pas-de-Calais).

He renowned the marsh: the summer cauliflower in Saint-Omer. In the 19th century, up to 400 market gardeners cultivated it, by hand and in boat. Today, production has mechanized. Up to three million cauliflowers heads are harvested each year between May and October.
