Black banner in one of the newspaper, message on the home page of the website or editorials: more than 250 media of around fifty countries participate Monday September 1 in an operation to denounce the number of journalists killed in Gaza, at the call of the NGO Avaz and to report without borders (RSF) which deducted more than 210 journalists killed since the start of military operations in Gaza. A major mobilization that Palestinian journalists have been waiting for a long time.
If there is a journalist who alone embodies the tragedy of Palestinian reporters, it is him. Wael al-Dahdouh, former Al Jazeera correspondent in Gaza, lost more than ten members of his nearby family, including his son Hamza himself a journalist killed in an Israeli raid last year. Refugee in Qatar since then, Wael al-Dahdouh continues to ask his international colleagues to furnish himself. “”To our colleagues in Europe, America, colleagues all over the world, where are you when all these tragedies take place?“, He says.
Same story with Bassam Abu Alrub, Palestinian journalist based in occupied West Bank where he has repeatedly suffered fire from the Israeli army, he claims to leave his home in Naplouse every morning “Not knowing if he will find him in the evening”.
He salutes this international initiative, but expects much more from his colleagues from the foreign press. “We have great expectations vis-à-vis foreign journalists. We do not expect them only slogans, we want them to press us on the ground, that they stand by our side on the field, shoulder against shoulder. We want to see the whole international press coming in Palestine, that she sees what is going on in these times of war and that she tells it!”he pleads.
On the occasion of this mobilization day, more than 150 media in the world, including Mediapart, The cross, humanityBlast (France), Al Jazeera (Qatar), The independent (United Kingdom), RTVE (Spain), The East Le JouR (Lebanon), Free (Belgium), Friday (Germany) will present their “some” in black with this message: “At the rate that journalists are killed in Gaza by the Israeli army, there will soon be no one left to inform you“. An initiative also supported by the companies of journalists of many French media including that of Radio France.
