The suspension of the reform was demanded by the socialists, who threatened, without this, to table a motion of censure against the government.

“Is the government ready for a new debate on the future of our pension system? The answer is yes.” Sébastien Lecornu announced, in his general policy speech before the National Assembly, Tuesday October 14, that he “will propose(he) in Parliament this fall that we suspend the 2023 pension reform until the presidential election”. “Social reform, as necessary as it may be, can only hold if it is understood and equitable,” justified the Prime Minister, while this suspension was demanded by the socialists and the CFDT.

“No increase in the age will take place from now until January 2028, as specifically requested by the CFDT. In addition, the duration of insurance will also be suspended and will remain at 170 quarters until January 2028”, he added.

To move forward on this thorny issue, Sébastien Lecornu will propose “to organize a conference on pensions and work, in agreement with the social partners”. She “will have time to decide before the presidential election” And “will be able to make its first conclusions in the spring” 2026, according to the Prime Minister. “The suspension will cost 400 million euros in 2026 and 1.8 billion in 2027, he recalled again. It will therefore have to be offset by savings. It cannot be achieved at the cost of an increased deficit.”
