FC Barcelona sees several million euros disappear after the cancellation of its match planned in Miami against Villarreal.
The match between Villarreal and FC Barcelona, initially scheduled for Miami for the 17th day of La Liga in December, will ultimately not be relocated. La Liga has made it official that the match will be played at the La Cerámica stadium, the Yellow Submarine’s usual home ground. In a statement, La Liga explained that the event had been canceled
“due to the uncertainty generated in Spain in recent weeks”between growing tensions and reactions from the players’ union (AFE) who opposed this type of international travel.
This decision comes against a backdrop of strong protests which have made the initiative untenable. La Liga has thus prioritized sporting safety and the health of players, while the Blaugrana schedule remains particularly busy between the championship, Champions League, Copa del Rey and international matches. A transatlantic trip in the middle of the season would have constituted an additional physical constraint for a squad already weakened by numerous injuries.
But it is above all on a financial level that the cancellation hurts FC Barcelona. As recalled ASthe Catalan club was to receive between 5 and 6 million euros for its participation in this match in the United States, a sum which would have made it possible to mitigate the ticketing losses recorded during the matches against Getafe and Valencia at the Johan Cruyff stadium. Joan Laporta thus sees an important income disappear, while the club continues to manage a delicate budgetary context.
What about the AC Milan-Como match?
The trend could soon reach Italy. After planning to play the AC Milan–Como match on February 6, 2026 in Perth (Australia), Serie A could, according to The Guardian, not obtain authorization to relocate this meeting.
Despite the green light from the Italian federation and UEFA, the approval of the Australian federation, the Asian Confederation (AFC) and, ultimately, Fifa remains necessary. The British daily indicates that the AFC is currently undergoing “big external pressures” to oppose the organization of this match in Perth. To be continued.
