“All battles of this nature take time to be won.” After the rejection by the deputies of the Zucman tax, Friday October 31, during a vote at first reading on the 2025 budget, the economist who inspired this text is not “not disappointed”. Because according to him, this tax “will eventually see the light of day”, he reacted on the microphone of the show “C à vous”, on France 5.

Supported by the PS, La France insoumise, the communists and the ecologists, the tax project in its name proposed a minimum tax of 2% on assets of more than 100 million euros, in the name of fiscal justice. The proposal was rejected by 228 deputies against 172, while a so-called “light” version of the text, imagined by the socialist deputies, was rejected by 228 deputies against 171.

This rejection, which was expected, constitutes “the beginning of the work that will have to be done: of explanation, of pedagogy, of citizen appropriation of knowledge”, reacted the director of the Taxation Observatory, who ensures that“a huge majority in the population (declares) for this floor tax on billionaires”.

“What is clear is that this will be a major issue in the 2027 presidential election”anticipates the economist, confident about the adoption of a similar measure in the near future:I don’t know if it’s going to take weeks, or months, or maybe years; I don’t think we can afford it given the very poor situation of public finances. But what is clear is that cThis will be at the heart of the debates in the months or years to come.”continued Gabriel Zucman.
