The boss of women’s tennis has stepped up to demand better remuneration during Grand Slam tournaments.
Undisputed world number one, Aryna Sabalenka launched the Women’s Masters perfectly. Opposed to the Italian Jasmine Paolini, the Belarusian won in two short sets (6-3, 6-1) and barely more than an hour of play. Enough to guarantee her an additional 355,000 dollars, the sum planned for each victory during the group stage.
In the event of a coronation in Riyadh, the Minsk native could win up to $5,235,000. A nice jackpot which would increase her XXL winnings a little more in 2025. Finalist in Australia and at Roland Garros and winner of the US Open, Aryna Sabalenka has in fact accumulated more than 12 million dollars in winnings this year, allowing her to reach a career total of 42.5 million.
But the boss of the WTA circuit wants more. She is among the forty leading players to campaign for an increase in the prize money for Grand Slam tournaments, namely the Australian Open, Roland-Garros, Wimbledon and the Australian Open.
Aryna Sabalenka wants more
“Grand Slam tournaments represent the pinnacle of our sport, she confided during an interview with the BBC . I’m just asking them to come to the negotiating table to talk and see if we can find mutually beneficial solutions. »
Last spring, a letter was sent by the residents of the ATP and WTA top 20 to the organizers of the Australian Open, Roland-Garros, Wimbledon and the US Open in order to request a greater share of the profits made by these four tournaments. The players took the example of the NBA, which guarantees players 50% of the revenue generated by the league. At Roland-Garros, with a total prize pool of 53.5 million euros, players would only receive 16% of the tournament’s revenue.
