While Shein is in the sights of the authorities, other Chinese platforms also sell problematic items, such as t-shirts with racist or anti-Semitic inscriptions. The controls do not seem sufficient.

The scandal is not limited to dolls. In just a few clicks, on other platforms like Temu or AliExpress, the France Télévisions teams were able to find dozens of articles of an anti-Semitic or racist nature. It is illegal according to the associations, but it is not always easy to report them to the authorities.

While shopping on platforms, we discovered some very shocking content. On the AliExpress site, for example, among the clothes, we find socks with a swastika, a symbol of Nazism. On the Temu site, racist comments alerted us, such as a reference to the word “nigger” in English, which means “negro”. Or a t-shirt entitled “Jewjitsu” that we showed to the SOS Racisme association. “We are very clearly on an anti-Semitic t-shirt, with a play on words that highlights the term Jewish, and with all the clichés of anti-Semitism, with tickets. We are very clearly on the association between Jews and money. We are on illicit content which, potentially, could be qualified as a racist insult”indicates Dominique Sopo, president of SOS Racisme. The association announces that it will take legal action and calls on Internet users to report any racist content.

Are the authorities aware of this phenomenon? We wanted to report the anti-Semitic t-shirt on the DGCCRF website, Signal Conso. But when, 15 minutes later, we manage to make the report, we receive a warning: “Your report will have very little effect because the company is not in France.” A situation experienced by the whistleblower at the origin of the child pornography doll scandal. Thursday October 30, after having tried in vain to alert Signal Conso, she ended up sending an email to the editorial staff of 60 Million consumers. It is ultimately a journalist himself who will then prevent the repression of fraud. “According to what we can read in her message, in fact, she hit a wall or at least a rejection. It’s a failure because an alert on this type of subject is extremely serious. And the repression of fraud via Signal Conso must treat them with the seriousness that is required”reports Adrian de San Isidoro, section manager at 60 Million consumers.

Contacted, Bercy affirms that the work was done well and that it was a case of poor handling. “The consumer’s report sent by 60 Millions to the DGCCRF has been taken into account. There is a dedicated route on Signal Conso which refers to the competent authorities”Bercy says. A path that is not always easy for users to identify.

We contacted the platforms. The incriminated products have been withdrawn from sale. AliExpress did not justify itself. Temu says he is opposed to any form of discrimination and says he has launched a broader investigation. In France, racist insults are punishable by one year in prison and a fine of 45,000 euros.
