Weapons sold on the Shein site are banned in France, triggering a new scandal for the brand. The government is now threatening to suspend the platform, while more and more voices are being raised to denounce these practices.

Clara Chappaz, former delegate minister for artificial intelligence, speaks on France Info on November 6: “These platforms are playing on us by saying that we are simply hosts. We are online commerce places where we have third-party sellers. So we are not above the law. Platforms that do not respect our rules have nothing to do with us.”

The executive launched two procedures. The site now has less than 48 hours to remove prohibited items sold by third parties. At the same time, the Ministry of the Interior took legal action. These procedures divide customers: “If there was the arms sale, it’s a bit boring, let’s say. It ruins everything,” says a customer. Another asks: “Why didn’t they do it long before? Why only now? Because there is the establishment of the BHV. No? I don’t know. Maybe they should have woken up long before, I think. No?”

For its part, Shein assures that it has taken the necessary measures. In a press release, the brand declares:
“Shein had already decided and announced the temporary suspension of uploads from independent third-party sellers.”

These procedures are not a first. In 2021, the government delisted the Wish site, which sold non-compliant products.
