No, Ahmed Néjib Chebbi was not arrested

Since the morning of Tuesday, November 18, 2025, viral publications have claimed that political opponent and president of the National Salvation Front, Ahmed Néjib Chebbi, has been arrested.

The information spread quickly on social networks and in several discussion groups, particularly those close to the regime, presenting it as a new step in a series of arrests targeting opposition figures.

As is often the case in tense political contexts, the rumor was picked up before any verification, creating immediate confusion.

After verification with reliable sources and close family members, this information was found to be completely unfounded. Safia Mestiri, wife of Ahmed Néjib Chebbi, contacted by BN Check, firmly denied the arrest. Those close to the leader have also refuted these allegations. The rumor is therefore false information, spread without foundation or prior verification.

This type of disinformation is part of a Tunisian political climate marked, in recent years, by an increase in arrests targeting political figures, lawyers, journalists and activists. Several national and international organizations have denounced a tightening of repression and an instrumentalization of justice to silence dissident voices. One of these cases is the vast file of “plot against state security”, considered one of the most sensitive political issues in recent years.

It should be noted that Ahmed Néjib Chebbi was sentenced to 18 years in prison in connection with this case. His brother, Issam Chebbi, was sentenced to the same sentence and is currently incarcerated in Borj Erroumi prison where he is on hunger strike.
