Hard blow for the wallets of millions of French people. Their property taxes will increase. This tax is based on surface area, but also on so-called comfort criteria. Problem: tax files are not necessarily up to date. And today, the Ministry of the Economy estimates that 7.4 million additional homes have all these comfort elements, such as the presence of running water, heating or bathtub, which will increase the amount of property tax.

“Is it legitimate to maintain a tax on having a toilet in your home? Is it legitimate to maintain a tax on having running water in your home? The property tax, its calculation today is not fair, and I think that the reform that is being put in place here is cosmetic compared to the injustice”deplores Corinne Jolly, president of the real estate site PAP.fr, on franceinfo.

The increase will come into effect next year and will be on average 63 euros. “Between the annual increase, the property tax, the rent control, crazy taxation, over-regulation, we are fed up”for his part castigates Sylvain Grataloup, president of the National Union of Real Estate Owners.

The measure should bring in an additional 466 million euros to local authorities.
