Broadcaster of all European Cups, Canal+ will not be able to offer its subscribers the match of a French club next week. And the situation could happen again.
We knew since the draw a few months ago that the problem could occur. This will not be lacking, and the bad news is confirmed for Canal+. A match between a French club in the European Cup will not be broadcast next week.
Friday, Thomas Sénécal, the sports director of Canal+, called the leaders of Lille,
according to L’Equipe. It is now confirmed that the match between Losc and Young Boys Berne, next Thursday (6th day of the Europa League), cannot be broadcast in France.
The reason is legal. The Swiss club’s jersey sponsor, “Plus500”, is an investment company whose certain financial contracts are classified as very risky by the French Financial Markets Authority (AMF). Since the end of 2016, their advertising has been banned in France by the consumer code, indicates L’Equipe.
Canal+ at an impasse
Since the start of the season, Canal+ has therefore had to do without the meetings of Young Boys Bern in the Europa League and Legia Warsaw in the Conference League, which had gone a little more unnoticed until now, and the confrontation with a French club. In the past, the problem also occurred with Atalanta Bergamo, then sponsored by Plus500.
The broadcaster doesn’t really have a solution, because blurring the Young Boys jersey is technologically impossible. In the event of retransmission of the match, Canal+ would face a fine of up to 100,000 euros. The only possible positive outcome? That the Bernese club agrees to withdraw its sponsor for the duration of the match, which would not be on the agenda. And the other bad thing for Canal+ is that there will be a Young Boys-OL on January 22 during the 7th day.
