a trend which “will continue in 2026”, according to an insurance comparator

Climatic events cost French insurers five billion euros in 2024, one of the most expensive years since the creation of the natural disaster regime, revealed UFC-Que Choisir on Tuesday.

“On the straw (our home insurance) more expensive, we are at a 12% increase in 2025 and the trend will continue in 2026 with increases of around 7 to 8%”explains Stéphanie Duraffourd, spokesperson for Assurland.com, an online insurance comparator on franceinfo. It is linked, she says, to a “sharp increase in climatic events: storm, hailstorm, drought”. The UFC-Que Choisir, which published a study on Tuesday, December 2, points out the fact that increasingly violent and frequent climatic events put “to the test” the insurance system and weaken consumers.

The natural disaster surcharge was reassessed on January 1, 2025, which logically increases the price of home insurance. “Under the impact of climatic events, we had a compensation system which was beginning to be under financial pressure, even in danger”justifies the spokesperson for Assurland.com. It went from 25 to 42 euros per year, “which ultimately remains quite modest when we look at the costs of climate events, notably 10 billion euros in 2022, and then 5 billion euros in 2024”.

This increase in the price of home insurance can also be explained by “an increase in repair costs, with materials costing more and more”underlines Stéphanie Durafourd. According to her, it is also because“we insure goods that cost more and more and are of greater value”. She finally specifies that“today, home insurers are facing a complicated economic situation, complex in the face of climate risks”.
