The Stop Pollution Collective announced, Monday December 1, 2025, that the number of students victims of an episode of asphyxiation in Gabès-ville has now increased to fifty. An initial report showed thirty students affected in the morning, but this figure increased as the day went on.
The students concerned, from Habib Bourguiba middle school and Chatt Essalem primary school, were admitted to Mohamed Sassi university hospital after inhaling toxic gas. According to information relayed by the collective, they presented breathing difficulties, headaches and nausea, requiring rapid treatment by medical teams.
Parents, cited by Stop Pollution, expressed their anger at the recurrence of these incidents, denouncing a permanent endangerment of their children. Several of them claim to have already transferred their children to other establishments, notably from Chatt Essalem college to Bab Bhar college, in an attempt to protect them.
The families are calling for radical and lasting measures to put an end to these episodes of intoxication, as well as for a reliable and transparent medical diagnosis of the real state of health of the students, while the analyzes carried out during previous incidents have been declared «normal».
The collective recalls that the Gabès region is regularly hit by episodes of air pollution attributed to industrial emissions, and reiterates its call for urgent intervention by the authorities to protect the population.
