Budget debates: the inevitable 49-3?
Sébastien Lecornu met with Socialist Party officials on Monday, December 1, to discuss the current budget discussion. The Prime Minister needs the support of the PS group to try to obtain a majority which approves the two budgetary texts, the finance bill and the Social Security budget. For the moment, the majority remains untraceable but negotiations continue.
Sarkozy, Le Pen affair, … Are the magistrates doing too much? How far will the standoff between judges and politicians go?
Relations between magistrates and politicians have deteriorated in recent years. Over the course of several cases and convictions, elected officials have increased attacks against judges accused of wanting to settle scores with politicians. In recent months, Marine Le Pen was sentenced at first instance for “embezzlement of public funds” in the case of the RN parliamentary assistants to four years in prison including two years, a fine of 100,000 euros, and five years of ineligibility with provisional execution. The appeal trial will take place from March 13 to 12. Former President of the Republic Nicolas Sarkozy was sentenced in the Libyan case to a prison term of five years with provisional execution, which earned him three weeks of detention. The appeal trial will be held from March 16 to June 3, 2026. In these two cases, the convicted politicians violently attacked the magistrates, accused of implementing “political justice”. After six years at the head of the National Financial Prosecutor’s Office, created after the Cahuzac scandal, prosecutor Jean-François Bohnert is leaving the PNF.
