Meticulous know-how, three centuries old. With each gesture, Alexandra Eurieult shapes the famous Limoges porcelain. A family tradition: “It’s definitely heritage. Of course, I was born there, my grandfather was in the porcelain business,” she confides.
A globally recognized heritage, soon to be protected on a European scale. Since December 1, labels have made it possible to guarantee the name of certain products throughout Europe, as is already the case for food. The Limoges Porcelain Manufacturers’ Union, of which this factory is a member, immediately filed a file with the European Commission.
Grégory Rosenblat, director of the Arquié workshops, explains: “Having a strong brand, recognized nationally, at European and international level, also allows us to defend our interests, to defend the quality, the origin of our products and the economic activity of our companies.”
If the application is accepted, customers throughout Europe will have assurance of the provenance of the porcelain. “There are plenty of counterfeits. It’s true that it’s good that it’s protected at European level,” says a resident. “As a buyer, we like to know where what we buy comes from,” adds another.
The fight for a porcelain label has been led for more than 40 years by Thierry Lachaniette, director of “Lachaniette Porcelaine”. To protect its exports, we would have to go even further, according to him: “The problem is that protection, as long as it is not global, we will always have these problems of competition from foreign porcelain which pollutes the market.”
Everything in its time: the European Commission has yet to validate the Limoges porcelain label.
