Serena Williams, the big comeback?

According to information from renowned American journalist Ben Rothenberg, Serena Williams (44) is preparing a return to competition. She has in fact made a request to be reinstated on the list of players monitored by the International Tennis Integrity Agency.

His sister Venus, aged 45, has still not retired. This may have given ideas to Serena Williams, 44, who could well resume her career. Retired since the 2022 US Open and her third round defeat against Ajla Tomljanovic, the American, mother of two daughters aged 8 and 2, could attempt an improbable comeback, according to Ben Rothenberg.

The renowned American journalist revealed this Tuesday that the player with 23 Grand Slam titles has requested to be reinstated on the list of players monitored by the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA), which deals in particular with anti-doping controls.

Serena allowed to play again in April?

“Serena’s name is still on the list of retired players, but not yet on the list of reinstated players. However, names only appear on the ITIA reinstatement list once the six-month period of returning to the test group has ended, not during this period. Unless she changes her mind, Serena’s name will soon appear on the list of reinstated players,” writes the journalist, who specifies, with supporting documentation, that Serena Williams’ name has appeared on the reinstatement list since at least October.

According to the regulations, a player must be on the list for at least six months before she can play competitively. She could therefore, theoretically, resume her career next April.

Serena wanted to come back this summer

Ben Rothenberg also reveals that Serena Williams had considered returning this summer, in order to play the doubles with her sister at the US Open. But she did not register on the ITIA list in time.

This time, the American seems to be taking the lead, for a return in 2026. It remains to be seen whether it would be to play singles, doubles with her sister or mixed doubles in the new formula inaugurated this year at the US Open…
