The winner of the 2025 African Cup of Nations, which begins this Sunday evening, will receive a nice jackpot.
It’s the big day! This Sunday (8 p.m.), Morocco will kick off “its” CAN against the Comoros, at the Prince Moulay Abdellah stadium in Rabat. On the eve of this opening match, CAF president Patrice Motsepe made several announcements during a press conference.
The boss of African football first announced that the African Cup of Nations would take place every four years from 2028. This change in programming will allow the arrival of a new competition: the African Nations League, which will take place every two years from 2029.
In addition, the South African leader announced a significant increase in the bonus awarded to the winner of this 35e edition of the CAN. The latter goes from 7 to 10 million dollars (around 8.5 million euros), or a high of almost 43%.
A bonus never seen before awarded to the winner
“ We have put in place what is truly the most exciting new framework for football on the continent.”declared Patrice Motsepe, and added: “
Remember, the winner’s bounty used to be less than $5 million. We increased it to 7 million, and now we are aiming for the 10 mark. » An increase which is due to the record revenues generated by ticketing and TV rights for the tournament.
