At the beginning of December, the Prime Minister, Sébastien Lecornu, announced that he wanted to accelerate France’s transition to electricity and reduce its dependence on fossil fuels. This is why the UFE suggests creating a special permit for electric cars.

While the government is currently working on a “major plan for electrification of uses”To enable France to achieve its goal of carbon neutrality in 2050, the French Electricity Union presented its own plan on Monday, December 22, in 50 proposals. This professional federation brings together large companies in the sector, such as EDF, TotalEnergies, Engie and other electricity producers and suppliers.
To encourage the growth of electric cars, the UFE, for example, proposes the generalization of a specific, and less expensive, driving license. The idea is to make this license more attractive to young people and thus encourage them to drive an electric car.
Currently, there are two forms of license: the classic B license and a license valid only for cars with automatic transmission. The latter is already more affordable, because it provides for 13 hours of compulsory driving, instead of 20. The French Electricity Union therefore proposes to make this simplified license even cheaper for electric cars, compared to automatic vehicles which run on gasoline or diesel.
In this case, driving schools should equip themselves with dual-control electric vehicles. So to support them, the UFE is imagining the implementation of targeted aid, such as a zero-interest loan. The federation also calls for extending the zero-interest loan for young drivers holding this license, so that they can then afford their car, because when purchasing, electric cars remain more expensive than thermal cars.
This federation also suggests that the Prime Minister issue a circular to encourage state ministries and services to only purchase electric vehicles with a good eco-score, for the renewal of their automobile fleet.
