Having come very close to becoming five-time F1 world champion, Max Verstappen has made no secret of the fact that he could stop the discipline soon if he does not like the new regulations.
At the end of 2025, a new threat hovers over Formula 1. Indeed, while new rules will be put in place in 2026, Max Verstappen says he is ready to slam the door if the new regulations do not suit him. During an interview with Press Association, the quadruple Dutch world champion, who came very close to making it five this year, was clear on the subject.
When taking stock of his future, the driver of the Red Bull team, who has never hidden being tempted by other automotive disciplines, linked his future to the new regulations in F1. “My contract runs until 2028, but it will depend on the new rules in 2026 and whether they are nice and fun. If they are not, I don’t see myself staying”Verstappen initially confided.
Verstappen is not obsessed with the title record
“I have many other passions, for other disciplines. I want to spend more time with my family and live according to my own schedule. In my mind, I know that if I close the chapter (of F1), it will be over. I don’t see myself stopping and coming back. Once I’m done, I’ll definitely stop.”subsequently declared the Dutchman (28 years old), whose departure could cause quite an earthquake and reshuffle a lot of cards.
“I’m not thinking about winning seven titles (a record currently held by Lewis Hamilton and Michael Schumacher). It’s not something I feel obligated to do before leaving the discipline. I can easily leave the Championship tomorrow”also explained Verstappen who came within two points of getting closer to the leading duo. Suffice it to say that the new regulations in F1, highly anticipated, could have serious consequences for the future.
