For Christmas, they released the champagne and the winning number. At the foot of the tree, a jackpot of 468 million euros was shared between the inhabitants of the small town.
A winner says: “Look, my hands are shaking because it’s something inexplicable. We think it will never happen to us, and yet it has happened to everyone.”
They have just won the first prize of the famous national lottery SpanishEl Gordo, which means “the jackpot”. Here, the tradition is that, to win, the inhabitants of the same city who wish to participate all play the same number. In La Bañeza, ticket 79,432 was played by 117 citizens. “We all thought it was a joke. So I called two friends and it turns out it’s not a joke,” says Pablo Acebes, player from La Bañeza and lottery winner.
A particularly welcome gift for this small town, seriously affected this summer by the fires. For several days, deadly fires ravaged the region of Castile and Leon. In archive images, we see the La Bañeza gymnasium transformed into a makeshift shelter. Today, they hope to repair the damage with the money raised.
Ana María de la Fuente, store owner and lottery winner, highlights:“Many houses have burned in several villages, and this will obviously give a boost to the economy of the entire region and the entire province.” Domingo de La Mata, board member of La Bañeza Football Club, adds: “It’s an endless joy. The people of the city needed this huge boost, and I’m delighted to have been a part of it.”
But the municipality is not the only one to have won. Other cities in Spain also reaped a nice jackpot thanks to the second prize.
