Carried by a “atmospheric river”, a meteorological phenomenon that carries water vapor from the tropics to the coasts and causes massive precipitation, storms have been hitting California since Wednesday, December 24.
Many homes were flooded in the south of the state. Muddy water in particular rushed down the mountain town of Wrightwood, trapping residents in their homes, said Christopher Prater, a spokesman for the county fire department. According to the Los Angeles Times, at least three people died in storm-related accidents, including a man killed by a falling tree.
A state of emergency was declared for Los Angeles and its region by Governor Gavin Newsom on Wednesday. Winds gusting up to nearly 90 km/h are forecast in parts of Southern California and rain is expected to continue this Friday, the US weather services have warned.
