The Tunisian General Labor Union (UGTT), through its regional union in Gafsa, returned “with deep sadness” to the death of young nurse Azhar Ben Hmida working at the local Redeyef hospital. She died of serious burns contracted while on night duty.
In a press release published Friday, December 26, 2025, the regional structure describes this tragedy as a tragedy revealing the serious deterioration of the health sector. She believes that it once again highlights the flagrant lack of resources, equipment and minimum security conditions within public establishments, particularly in the interior regions.
A drama symptomatic of a disengagement of the authorities
For the union organization, this incident does not constitute an isolated case, but is part of a series of failures resulting from prolonged marginalization policies and a disengagement of the authorities in terms of protecting health personnel and citizens. She deplores that medical and paramedical executives are left without adequate protection, exposed to major professional risks.
The regional labor union in Gafsa presented its most sincere condolences to the family of the deceased, her colleagues as well as the residents of the town of Redeyef. She holds the Ministry of Health as well as regional and local authorities fully responsible, denouncing their failure to provide dignified health services in the region.
“A serious, transparent and thorough investigation”
The union calls for the immediate opening of a serious, transparent and in-depth investigation in order to determine the exact circumstances of the tragedy and establish responsibilities. He recalls that the dignity of health professionals, like that of citizens, constitutes a red line, and that any persistent neglect in improving health services is considered unacceptable.
Finally, the regional union expressed its total solidarity with all health personnel in Redeyef and throughout the governorate of Gafsa, saying it was ready to engage in all forms of legitimate struggle to defend the right to life and guarantee decent health services for all.
