Eye surgery: Femto LASIK enters public hospitals

The Ministry of Health announced, Saturday December 27, 2025, the effective introduction of the Femto LASIK technique, considered one of the most advanced methods in refractive surgery, within the public hospital sector. This advance marks a significant step in the modernization of ophthalmological care in Tunisia.

According to the ministerial press release, the first two operations to correct refractive disorders using Femto LASIK were successfully carried out at the Charles Nicolle University Hospital Center. The operations took place in optimal conditions, with excellent visual results and without the occurrence of post-operative complications, attesting to the technical mastery of this high-precision procedure by the medical teams.

This success was made possible thanks to close coordination between the medical and paramedical executives of the ophthalmology department, under the supervision of the head of department, Dr. Khalil Raies, whose scientific and organizational supervision was instrumental in the implementation of this innovative technology.

The Femto LASIK technique is based on the combined use of latest generation lasers, in particular the femtosecond laser, allowing extremely precise cutting of the corneal flap, without the use of traditional mechanical surgical instruments. This approach minimizes tissue trauma, considerably reduces operative risks and promotes rapid visual recovery, often within the first hours following the procedure. It is mainly indicated in the treatment of myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism.
