Somaliland: Tunisia rejects Israeli recognition

Tunisia has expressed support for the positions of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), the League of Arab States and the African Union Commission, all of which have denounced Israel’s recognition of the Somaliland region, an integral part of the Federal Republic of Somalia.

In a press release published on Sunday, December 28, 2025, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Migration and Tunisians Abroad reacted to the press release published the day before, affirming “Tunisia’s total solidarity with Somalia and its unreserved support for its rejection of any measure affecting its sovereignty, the unity of its territory and its territorial integrity”.

A recognition deemed illegal and dangerous

Tunisian diplomacy describes this recognition as “serious and unprecedented measure”, believing that it is part of a strategy of the Zionist movement aimed at the expansion and fragmentation of the Arab region through practices deemed illegal and criminal. Tunis further considers that this act“devoid of any legal value”, is the behavior of an outlaw state seeking to impose arrangements serving its declared and covert interests.

According to the ministry, this approach is also part of a broader logic aimed at facilitating plans for the forced displacement of the Palestinian people from their lands, while strengthening control of certain strategic commercial routes, in defiance of international law.

Call for international mobilization

Tunisia does not limit itself to a verbal condemnation of what it describes as “Zionist abuses and crimes perpetrated for decades”, but calls on the international community to act quickly and effectively to defeat this decision, which it considers to be a flagrant and persistent violation of international conventions and standards.

Tunis also reaffirms its categorical rejection of this recognition and renews its constant position in favor of the right of the Palestinian people to the entire territory of Palestine, as well as to the establishment of an independent and fully sovereign State, with Al-Quds as its capital. It also reiterates its absolute opposition to all plans of deportation and forced displacement targeting the Palestinian people.

A position shared by several Arab, African and Muslim countries

This position is part of a collective regional and international condemnation, notably expressed in a joint statement published in Amman on December 27, 2025 by the foreign ministers of several Arab, African and Muslim countries, as well as by the OIC. The text strongly rejects the Israeli announcement of December 26, 2025, calling it a clear violation of international law and the United Nations Charter, and warns of its serious consequences for peace and security in the Horn of Africa, the Red Sea and internationally.

The signatories also underlined their total support for the sovereignty of Somalia, while rejecting any attempt to link this recognition to plans to displace the Palestinian people, deemed unacceptable both in substance and in form.
