At Christmas, will there be a multitude of gifts under the tree? This year, according to a study, the French will spend on average 491 euros, the lowest budget since 2017. So, some are anticipating their purchases. “We anticipate all the little stratagems, scratching a little here and there,” testifies a Frenchman.
For consumers, worry takes precedence over the desire to spend. “Today, the French are afraid of the budget deficit, they are worried about political instability, and we have an international context which probably does not help. And when the French are not in good spirits, we see that they tend to consume less”, explains Julie Gaillot, director of the CSA Research society division.
The fear for retailers concerns purchasing and the purchasing density of customers. The latter could desert their stores in favor of the ultra-low prices of Chinese platforms. “This should not be an even greater diversion of French people towards online platforms which often offer very, very low prices, but also often dangerous products and falsely lowered prices”, estimates the general director of the Commerce Alliance. Despite an increasingly tight budget, Christmas remains by far the French people’s favorite holiday.
