Author of his career best by scoring 55 points, reigning MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander greatly contributed to the 135-141 success after overtime from Oklahoma City to Indiana in the remake of the last final. Golden State also won after overtime, against Denver, with 42 points from Stephen Curry.
From the third day of the regular season, the NBA offered a remake of the last final. And it was Oklahoma City that won again! Winner of Houston after overtime on Tuesday for the day of the ring presentation, the Thunder traveled to Indiana, where they had put up a magnificent fight for the title last June. And OKC won again after overtime, with a score of 135-141. If the current Pacers no longer resemble the team of last season, following the serious injury of their star Tyrese Haliburton and the departure of Myles Turner, the 2025 champion has not changed, and he can still count on his MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander.
Already author of 35 points against the Rockets during the restart,
the 27-year-old Canadian scored his career points record: 55 points, 15/31 on shots (including 2/7 at 3 points) and 23/26 on free throws! No less than three Indiana players were “eliminated” for having committed 6 fouls (Nesmith, Mathurin, Sheppard), and the Thunder star greatly contributed to it. This match, however, was very close, with neither team ever having more than a seven-point lead.
Pascal Siakam allowed Indiana to snatch overtime by scoring seven seconds from the end (113-113), then it was Benedikt Mathurin (36pts, 11rbds), symbol of the Pacers who didn’t give up, who won the second overtime by scoring thirteen seconds from the buzzer (124-124). On both occasions, Gilgeous-Alexander tried to give the Thunder victory, but missed his shot. In the second overtime, OKC took the lead from 128-130 with 3’13 remaining and never let go of the lead. On Saturday, the Thunder will travel to Atlanta. For another victory after extra time?
Curry and the Warriors spoil Gordon’s record
There were only two games scheduled for Thursday, and the second also ended in overtime. After beating the Lakers in the opening, Golden State took the scalp of Denver, with a score of 137-131.
The Nuggets led by fourteen points shortly before halftime, but saw the Warriors come back little by little, and take the lead at the end of the third quarter. At 7’22 from the end, Denver had regained the lead and led 100-109, and again 109-116 at 3’50 from the buzzer. But Stephen Curry sent the two teams into overtime by scoring three points 22 seconds from the end (120-120), Nikola Jokic (21pts, 13rbds, 10pds during this match) then missing the winning lay-up.
Trailing 123-125 during overtime, the Warriors finally reversed the trend to win by six points.
Despite his 37 years, Stephen Curry showed that he should still be counted on this season: he finished with 42 points, 14/25 on shots (6/12 at 3pts) and 8/8 on free throws. He almost made us forget the immense performance of Aaron Gordon, who broke his career record, at age 30, by scoring 50 points (17/21 on shots including 10/11 on 3pts)!
