Markets have taken place in Arras, in Pas-de-Calais, since the Middle Ages. The inhabitants are proud of the historic fiber of the trade in their city.
In Arras (Pas-de-Calais), in one of the city’s squares, a market has been held since the Middle Ages, making the inhabitants’ pride. “The market was established at the time when the city wanted to depart from the religious side of the city, it was, for the bourgeois of the time, a way of earning money”, explains a resident. The first traces of the market date back to the 12th century. Two places are built, entirely devoted to trade.
The large place is used for cereal trading when the smallest, the place of heroes, is reserved for market gardeners in the region. This second place was completely destroyed during the First World War and rebuilt identically. The gable houses, with typically Flemish architecture, were inhabited by merchants. “This ground floor is protected by arcades, this is what really makes the specificity of houses and places”Indicates Cécile Legrand, guide speaker.
