The Zucman tax has become, in recent weeks, the symbol of the debate on the taxation of very large fortunes. Friday October 31, the Zucman tax, in its initial and lighter version, was rejected by the deputies in the National Assembly. The Socialist Party had made it a condition of its non-censorship. Is a compromise still possible?

Does the Zucman tax on the ultra-rich make the government tremble again on Friday October 31? This 2% tax on assets of more than 100 million euros was rejected by the Assembly. The “no” wins because the National Rally, the central bloc, but also the Republicans voted against.

We have the tax record. We have record taxes all over the world and there are MPs who spend their time in this chamber just wondering: could, by some miracle, there not yet be a small additional tax that could be further increased?“, Laurent Wauquiez, fervent opponent of a new tax.

This is a setback for the left which ardently defended this tax. “In eight years of Macronism, the fortunes of 500 families have doubled. And with that, we come to demand two percent, two small percent, but we are weak! Let’s wake up!“, proclaims François Ruffin.

The Prime Minister, it is rare, came to the Assembly for this crucial debate. He once again denounced this Zucman tax. “There is no constitutional tax which is not censored by the Constitutional Council, which has a high yield of 10 or 15 billion euros. I don’t believe it, we don’t believe it“, reiterates Sébastien Lecornu.

So, what is the outcome now for the government? Sébastien Lecornu made gestures. No more freezing of pensions, no more freezing of minimum social benefits in 2026, but the socialists still pose the threat of censorship. “None of us here on the left and among the ecologists are afraid of the vote. And so we will go to elections if necessary, so hear and negotiate“, says Olivier Faure, first secretary of the Socialist Party.

Is Sébastien Lecornu on reprieve? Friday evening, he asked his ministers to bring together the Assembly group leaders to negotiate.
