Fight against violence against women on public transport. Since the sexual assault on the RER of a young Brazilian woman three weeks ago, a petition has been circulating. With nearly 20,500 signatures on Tuesday November 4, she asks that wagons are reserved for women. Some RER C passengers we met are for it. “If we had this type of wagon, my friends and I could say to ourselves, we’re going back by transport, even if it’s a little late, because we wouldn’t be afraid of simply being attacked.”confides one of them. “I think we might be a little less bothered,” assures another.

But other travelers are uncomfortable with the idea of separating women from men. “It’s quite a delicate subject because if we start from there, why not at that time also create bars for men, bars for women, shopping centers for men, places intended for men, places intended for women”imagine a passenger.

Train carriages reserved for women exist in Japan, Mexico and India. But in France, this idea does not appeal to security officials, who met on Tuesday November 4 at the Paris police headquarters. “We should put two police officers in each car? Because who would prevent a predator from entering this car? So I think it’s a cry that needs to be heard. It’s a good question, but a bad answer”declares Frédéric Péchenard, vice-president of the Île-de-France Region.

The Île-de-France region wants cameras augmented by artificial intelligence to be authorized, as during the Olympic Games. They alert law enforcement in the event of unusual behavior.
