The 24 -year -old’s corpse had been discovered by police on February 12 at the edge of a road crossing a farm field, in the Finger Lakes region, north of New York.
According to the police, he started from the state of Minnesota in September and was to find a girlfriend met online. His family had lost all contact with him.
Seven suspects, three men and four women, including the young woman met online, aged 19 to 38, have been arrested since February 12 and charged for murder. “The circumstances that have led to the murder of Sam Nordquest are a horrible combination of factors: increasing permissiveness towards anti -drug feelings, lack of support for transgender people from diversity who seek to establish human relationships and indifference for LGBTQ+ people”said the director of the New York antiviolence project, Audacia Ray.
“In a political context where the dynamics of support and access to care for transgender people in the United States is clearly eroding, the number of transgender victims of homicide remains significant, with more than 30 deaths in 2024, around 70 % were transgender people of color”she added.
At this stage, justice has not recognized the murder of Sam Nordquest as motivated by racial hatred or gender identity, and few details have emerged on the mobiles of the suspects. “Limiting oneself to a crime motivated by hatred would be an injustice with regard to Sam. It deserves that its story is told in its entirety”explained the prosecutor.
During a vigil that had brought together several associations on February 21 in New York, the deputy of the governor of New York in charge of LGBTQ+questions, Chanel Lopez, said that “His brutal death is another painful reminder of violence that our community faces every day. We cannot look away ”.
