The SNCF wishes to put a large renovation and maintenance plan on the rails. For this, the railway company seeks to bring together 1.5 billion euros, which it could find by increasing the contribution of passengers of one euro per ticket, according to experts. “We must explain the challenge behind these large figures, which is to maintain in good condition the French rail network”underlines Jean-Pierre Farandou, CEO of the SNCF, guest of the “8 pm” of June 19.
But the missing billion to finance the maintenance of the network, currently assumed by the SNCF up to three billion per year, is not “Not for now, I don’t ask for the money in next year’s budget”specifies the manager of Bordeaux company, who ensures that “The SNCF will do the work on its own in 2025, 2026, 2027”. “But from 2028, it is essential that we find this billion more if you do not want it to have breakdowns, catenary ruptures, slowdowns”However, warns Jean-Pierre Farandou.
And to add, as for the idea of a ticket tax: “I think I understood that people find that the prices of the tickets are rather too high, as far as we are concerned, it is not at all an idea that we push”.
