The 8-hectare complex is located in Brumath (Bas-Rhin), about twenty kilometers from Strasbourg. More than 50,000 m² of buildings have been constructed by the Chinese telephone equipment manufacturer Huawei. A brand new factory, but which remains desperately empty. Production should have started on January 1, 2026. But today, the 300 promised production positions have not been filled. According to certain information confirmed by elected officials in the sector, the Chinese giant is considering abandoning the project.
“This factory is designed to assemble 4G and 5G antennas, but they have lost a lot of market share in Europe. So Huawei is asking itself the question of either keeping the activity or choosing other options such as reselling the site”explains Vincent Thiébaut, deputy (Horizons) for the 9th constituency of Bas-Rhin.
Announced with great fanfare at the end of 2020, the establishment of this factory near Strasbourg was nevertheless the symbol of Huawei’s ambitions in France and Europe. But several European countries have tightened their legislation to limit the use of equipment from the Chinese group, for security reasons, hence this possible turnaround. When contacted, Huawei has so far declined to respond to our requests, but no definitive decision has yet been taken on the future of its Alsatian factory.
