Biniam Girmay, destination confirmed

Left free by the Belgian team Intermarché Wanty, Biniam Girmay (25 years old) has already found a base. The Eritrean sprinter joins the NSN Cycling team (formerly Israel-Premier Tech), of which he will be leader from next season.

Biniam Girmay (25 years old) has already found a base. Four days after the Belgian team Intermarché Wanty announced that the Eritrean sprinter, who had defended the colors of the team since 2021, would no longer be part of the squad in 2026, the 132nd in the last Tour de France is already set on his future. This Monday, the Swiss team (but headquartered in Spain) NSN Cycling, which took over the World Tour license from the late Israel-Premier Tech team, announced that Girmay had signed up for three seasons. A new challenge therefore awaits the green jersey of the 2024 Grande Boucle, which also arrives in its new colors as the future leader of the team.

Finnish general manager Kjell Carlström does not hide the fact that he expects a lot from his new recruit. “His versatility as a sprinter and classics specialist, as well as his natural leadership qualities, will bring additional depth to NSN’s growing roster of ambitious young riders (…) Biniam represents everything we love about cycling. We are incredibly happy to welcome him. I couldn’t imagine a better time to start a new chapter together.”

Girmay: “We can win one of the biggest races together”

The young rider, for his part, is counting on this new chapter of his career to expand his list of achievements which are slow to grow. The Eritrean also wants to be very ambitious. “My main goal for the future, as I am only 25 years old, is simple: to win bike races. I really like winning in the classics and, at the moment, I have only won Gent-Wevelgem so I still want to achieve more with the team. I believe that one day we can win one of the biggest races in cycling together. »

Second this year in the Classic Dunkirk as well as the Tour de Cologne but also 3rd in the Grand Prix de Wallonie, the native of Asmara, like his future manager, expects a lot from this new challenge which awaits him within a team which has everything to please him. “I’m really excited to be here, especially with this new atmosphere and new start. I have already heard a lot of positive things from my new teammates. When I look back on the last two years, the team has progressed enormously. There is an excellent team spirit.”
