Borrowings without a trace: Ridha Chkoundali denounces a worrying vagueness on public finances

Economist Ridha Chkoundali called, during his appearance on IFM this Sunday, November 2, 2025, for the government to demonstrate transparency regarding loans contracted directly from the Central Bank of Tunisia (BCT).

According to him, the State resorted to two direct loans from the BCT, amounting to seven billion dinars in 2024 and another seven billion in 2025, and soon eleven billion dinars in total, without the public or Parliament knowing the destination. “ We know nothing about these funds, or where they were spent », affirmed the economist.

Ridha Chkoundali thus urged deputies and members of the National Council of Regions and Districts to ask the Ministry of Finance for a detailed table tracing the allocation of these sums.

He recalled that, according to economic rules, direct borrowing from the Central Bank should only be authorized for productive projects, that is to say those linked to development and wealth creation. “ If indebtedness to the Central Bank is intended for consumption or to fill the current deficit, it becomes dangerous for economic stability “, he stressed.

Finally, the economist believes that the amount of these loans should not exceed development spending, otherwise their impact on the national economy would be limited, or even counterproductive.
