The conservative and radical right, as well as part of the Nordic left, seems to have won the ideological battle in immigration to Brussels. After having authorized, in March, the European States to create “return platforms” of undocumented migrants outside Europe, the European Commission decided, Tuesday, May 20, to review the concept of “safe third countries”, and therefore, to facilitate the expulsions of asylum seekers to countries by which they only transited. This change also opens the door to the opening of asylum seekers in distant countries, like the projects developed, but since decrees, by Denmark or the United Kingdom with Rwanda.
The revision of the concept of “secure third countries”, present in the asylum procedure adopted in May 2024 within the framework of the asylum and migration pact, “Will accelerate asylum procedures and reduce pressure on asylum systems, while preserving legal guarantees for applicants and ensuring compliance with fundamental rights”specifies the commission in a press release.
