In the aftermath of Donald Trump’s threats to the increase in customs duties on French champagnes and wines, winegrowers are preparing to change the prices of their bottles to limit the increase in taxes.
In this particular cellar of the Gard, the owner of the premises produces 11,000 hectoliters of wines in Costières de Nîmes and IGP Pont du Gard. 36 % of its volumes are exported to the United States, the leading foreign customer before Canada and Belgium. To cope with a potential increase in customs duties of 200 % on French wines, the winegrower and its importer have already planned to react, as during the first Trump tax in 2019: “We will share part of the tax with the importer”.
Barely time to consider a solution that Donald Trump upsets the game. In the afternoon of March 13, the American president declared on his social network “If the European Union does not withdraw its surcharge of 50 % on whiskey, we will immediately set up 200 % customs duties on Champagne and all wines from France and Europe”. Should these statements be taken seriously? France affirms that it will not give in to threats and says ready to retaliate alongside the European Union.
