In Brussels, the twenty-seven agree to the plan “to rearm Europe”, according to a spokesperson for the EU
The leaders of the 27 member states of the European Union, gathered at the summit in Brussels, gave their agreement to a plan of the European Commission to strengthen their defense, announced a spokesperson for the European Union (EU), reports the France-Presse Agency (AFP).
The president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, proposed a plan, called “rearmer Europe”, which aims to mobilize some 800 billion euros, including 150 billion in the form of loans, to strengthen the continent’s defense capacities.
The European Council “Stresses the need to substantially increase defense expenses”According to the text of a joint declaration from the EU countries consulted by AFP. This text takes over the main points of the plan unveiled this week, and asks the European Commission to transcribe them quickly into concrete proposals.
Several avenues are mentioned, the possibility of which for member states to significantly increase their military spending without this being taken into account in the calculation of their deficit, in principle limited to 3 % of their gross domestic product (GDP). This possibility offered to the Member States can make it possible to generate some 650 billion euros over four years, assured the European Commission.
A proposal which a few months ago would have caused an uproar among certain member states, concerned with budgetary stability in Europe. But the lines move. Carrying out a long unimaginable turn, Germany is now considering massive investments to strengthen its army.
The European Commission also wants to provide member states with some 150 billion euros in the form of loans for aid to finance, in common, investments in their defense.
The twenty-seven have “Hailed” this initiative and said they would examine it “Priority”. These funds must be used to invest in common, between at least two member states, in the fields where needs are the most urgent such as anti -aircraft defense, missiles, drones and antidron systems or artillery systems. And, ensures mMe von der Leyen, with this equipment, “Member States will be able to massively strengthen their aid to Ukraine”.
