Wednesday, February 26, François Bayrou announced that France was going to ask Algiers “that all agreements be re -examined (1968) and the way in which (they) are executed”, with a period of “six weeks”.
In the open standstill between France and Algeria, the Prime Minister hardens the tone. While Algiers still refuses to welcome certain nationals targeted by OQTF on his soil, François Bayrou launched an ultimatum as to the 1968 agreements. “It is absolutely unacceptable that this situation will continue. This means that France will ask the Algerian government to be re -examined all the agreements”he said. A review in the six weeks otherwise he threatens to break the agreements.
These agreements were concluded after the Algerian War, when France needed labor. They allow traffic advantages to Algerians. For example, an Algerian in France for three years can obtain a ten -year residence permit, against five years of residence for other foreigners. This treaty also facilitates family reunification and grants freedom of establishment for traders.
