Big success for babies at Beauval Zoo. Births have always been one of the attractions of the site. If Beauval lists 900 reproductions per year, the recent arrival of a small girafon arouses the wonder of visitors. “I wanted to see the birth of the little giraffe”a visitor is delighted. Fifteen days after putting down, the Girafon, named Mia, and his mother are doing well. “It is a real satisfaction in the life of the zoo. Inevitably, when the goal for the conservation of species is to have reproduction, we are always satisfied when there is a birth”Comments Baptiste Demarsan, animal manager.

All these births have nothing to chance. Captivity reproduction is managed by humans in a framework defined at European level. In Beauval, 234 species incorporate a breeding program. “There is a coordinator who will manage the population on a European scale and who will say which individuals can reproduce with whom, to keep this genetics”explains Laëtitia Latorre, manager of the conservation at the Beauval Zoo. Preserve species, a living heritage to the delight of visitors.
