The president Bernardo Arévalo decreed a “National Mourning”. At least 55 people were killed in Guatemala on Monday, February 10, in a coach accident with 75 people on board. This is one of the worst balance sheets over the past 10 years in Latin America. The bus was traveling from San Agustin Acasagastlan and fell below the Belize bridge, the main bridge to enter the city of Guatemala, the country’s capital.

According to the first elements of the investigation, the driver would have lost control of his vehicle and hit several cars before damaging the roof. “The bus continues straight, crosses a metal barrier and falls into a ravine of about 20 meters until reaching the place where a wastewater river is located”said a firefighter.

The Minister of Communications, Miguel Angel Diaz, explained that the coach has been in service for more than 30 years but held a transport license in force. In particular, the survey will have to determine whether the vehicle carried more passengers than its authorized capacity.
