More than half of French people (53%) provide eating less beef than before, according to an opinion Way survey commissioned by Charal that Franceinfo exclusively reveals Thursday, April 17. This drop in consumption results in a lower frequency of beef consumption but also, for four out of ten French people, by smaller portions. A trend that is also verified for other meats, according to a Harris Interactive Survey for the Action Action Climate Network.
The decrease in consumption of beef is more pronounced in 45-60 year olds and 61 and over, depending on the study. It is more stable among 26-44 year olds and 18-25 year olds “who probably already consumed shortly before”ensures the study. The price remains the first reason invoked by consumers questioned to explain this drop in consumption. Almost one in two respondents also said to favor meat of better quality or less love meat than before. More than three -quarters of consumers questioned also provide promoting local production meats.
Consumption habits change from one generation to another. The 61 years and over are traditionally omnivorous, attached to quality and local origin, while 18-25 year olds tend more towards a less meat food, with greater sensitivity to breeding conditions and the environment. In this last category, 50% of respondents say they consume less beef because of too polluting production or 48% to oppose breeding conditions.
In detail, 67% of those questioned consider themselves “Traditional omnivorous“, a quarter (24%) “Flexitarians” and 5% vegetarians, vegans or vegans.
This survey was carried out on a sample of 1003 people, representative of the French population aged 18 and over. The sample was formed according to the quota method, with regard to the criteria of sex, age, socio -professional category and region of residence. The interviews were carried out from February 25 to March 4, 2025.
