“It is no longer an issue of unfair competition, it is a criminal issue”, believes MP Antoine Vermorel-Marques

Invited Monday on franceinfo, the LR deputy and rapporteur of the information mission on controls of products imported into France calls for “at least a temporary closure of the Shein platform to verify that it will not recur.” The e-commerce platform is summoned before the deputies to explain itself after the revelations on the marketing of sex dolls.

“How is it possible to sell dolls to child molesters without any control? exclaims Antoine Vermorel-Marques, MP (LR) for the Loire, Monday November 3 on franceinfo. He is also rapporteur for the fact-finding mission on controls on products imported into France and is due to hear in mid-November, alongside other MPs, the Chinese e-commerce giant Shein after the revelation of the sale of child pornography dolls on its platform. French justice confirmed on Monday that it had opened investigations into Shein, AliExpress, Temu and Wish.

During the hearing before elected officials, the rapporteur wishes to demand accountability from Shein. How is it possible to incite child abuse online? he says. And even if the products were withdrawn, how much profit did the platform make with these dolls and what right did it have to allow the sale of these products online to everyone, which incites violence against children?

“What we expect from the platform is the same thing as a physical store”continues the MP.

“In Roanne, where I am, if a business sold a sex doll for child criminals, in less than a minute, there would be a prefectural decree to close the business.”

Antoine Vermorel-Marques therefore asks “a minimum temporary closure of the platform to verify that it will not recur and that it has put in place internal processes to limit these abuses which are unacceptable”. The prosecution confirmed Monday to franceinfo that it had “received four reports” fraud prevention (DGCCRF) concerning “Shein, AliExpress, Ago and Wish”after seeing the marketing of such dolls on these sites. Antoine Vermorel-Marques confirms that after Shein, “other platforms will also be interviewed”.

The MP also plans to ask Shein if they are “able to provide us with the list of people who purchased these dolls so that we can send their names to the public prosecutor and ensure that they will not reoffend and that they are under surveillance by the police.” “It is no longer an issue of unfair competition, it is a criminal issue of endangering the lives of our children,” he continues.

“We have 80,000 offenses per year affecting minors in France, we can no longer let this happen.”

According to the elected official, France has the means to fight against the e-commerce giants. The problem is that they “want the French market, but without French rules. And that’s not possible”. The Shein platform “is in a situation of recidivism since they were condemned by the CNIL, condemned by the DGCCRF, singled out by the OECD. And we let it happen”, he laments. “This can no longer continue, we must restore fair competition in this area.” The MP recalls that the fact-finding mission, set up since last summer, must produce a “report in December and we will have very firm recommendations to ensure that we fight against unfair competition from the products that we import today every day.”
