Walid Regragui’s Morocco ended its historic series of victories against Mali (1-1) on Friday evening at the CAN.
Morocco is not there yet. Held in check by Mali (1-1), Friday evening, after their inaugural victory against the Comoros (2-0), the Atlas Lions are not yet officially qualified for the round of 16 of “their”
African Cup of Nations. They will have to wait until the third day of the group stage and their opposition against Zambia on Monday (8 p.m.).
Whistled by the public at the Prince Moulay Abdallah stadium at the end of the match, the Moroccans finished the game frustrated. It must be said that Walid Regragui’s men had the match in hand after Brahim Diaz opened the scoring from a penalty just before the break, but they suffered from the rise of the Malians in the second half, who equalized on a penalty converted by Lassine Sinayoko.
Beyond the disappointment of not having managed to take the three points, and therefore to validate their ticket for the round of 16 this Saturday evening, the Atlas Lions saw their incredible series of victories come to an end.
Regragui: “We’re starting from scratch”
Under the orders of Walid Regragui, Morocco remained on 19 consecutive victories. A world record. The last time that Achraf Hakimi and his partners did not win dates back to March 26, 2024, when he conceded a 0-0 draw against Mauritania.
“The record was better if it stopped today and we started winning again. We start from zero”commented the Moroccan coach in a post-match press conference. The host country of this CAN 2025 will try to restart a series on Monday, against Zambia.
