Kairouan: tension and protests after the murder of a taxi driver


The city of Kairouan experienced, on Sunday December 21, 2025, a climate of tension marked by protest movements led by several individual taxi drivers, following the murder of one of their colleagues during a robbery that occurred during the night from Saturday to Sunday.

Protesters gathered in the square “Soubhan Allah”under a strong security presence. They called on the authorities to adopt dissuasive measures and strengthen the protection of drivers in the face of the growing security risks they face in recent times. Among their demands is also the authorization to install surveillance cameras inside taxis, as a means of prevention and protection.

In a statement to the correspondent of Diwan FMthe secretary general of the individual taxi union under the Tunisian General Labor Union (UGTT), Mehdi Hammami, underlined the seriousness of the security situation experienced by drivers and the need for urgent interventions to guarantee their safety.

On Sunday morning, an individual taxi driver died in Kairouan, succumbing to serious injuries after being the victim of a robbery the day before. According to a security source cited by Diwan FMthe attack was perpetrated by an individual who stabbed him several times in the neck and chest. Despite his emergency transfer to Aghlabides hospital and attempts at medical treatment, the victim succumbed to his injuries.

The same source specified that the security forces managed, quickly, to identify the alleged perpetrator of the attack as well as his accomplice. The two suspects were arrested and reportedly admitted the charges against them.
