Libya now recognizes the authority of the International Criminal Court (ICC), which is investigating crimes against alleged humanity committed on its territory since 2011, the CPI prosecutor Karim Khan announced on Thursday, May 14.

“I salute the courage, leadership and decision of the Libyan authorities”Who sent an official declaration to this effect concerning war crimes and crimes against humanity committed since 2011, in progress and until the end of 2027, added Karim Khan at a meeting of the UN Security Council. “This declaration received today represents an important step towards a new platform of collective action between the ICC and Libya in the pursuit of justice”he added.

Libya is not a member of the status of Rome, founding treaty of the ICC. But the Security Council had seized the court of the situation in Libya in February 2011, after the start of unprecedented protests, violently repressed, against the regime of Muammar Gaddafi. A seizure that has enabled the Court to do its job, with an improvement in recent times of Tripoli’s cooperation.

In this context, Karim Khan called on Thursday the Libyan prosecutor, al-seddik al-sour, at “Stop and deliver” Osama Almasri Najim, against whom the Court issued in January an arrest warrant for war crimes and crimes against humanity.

Mr. Najim, who would have been responsible for the Mitiga detention center in Tripoli, has been wanted, since February 15, 2015, for murders, rapes and tortures committed on prisoners because of their religion, or when they were suspected of a “Immoral behavior”or to support or be affiliated with armed groups.
