Louis Schweitzer, captain of industry and senior civil servant, died Thursday November 6 at the age of 83, his family announced Friday. Former chief of staff of Laurent Fabius at Matignon, Louis Schweitzer spent twenty years at Renault, including thirteen as CEO of the car manufacturer between 1992 and 2005. He was still honorary president of the diamond brand.
The Schweitzer years at Renault were marked by the failed marriage with the Swedish Volvo in 1993, the privatization of the group in 1996, the 3,000 layoffs at the Vilvoorde factory in 1997, but also the conquest of markets in Eastern Europe, Latin America and Asia.
After leaving the head of the French manufacturer, where Carlos Ghosn succeeded him, Louis Schweitzer remained very active in the economic sector, joining the boards of directors of numerous companies such as Volvo, BNP, L’Oréal or Veolia Environnement. Grandnephew of Doctor Albert Schweitzer, Nobel Peace Prize winner in 1952, cousin of Jean-Paul Sartre, Louis Schweitzer was still president of the Animal Law, Ethics and Sciences Foundation (LFDA) until the beginning of October.
In 2021, this Sciences Po graduate and enarque was called to the rescue for an interim position at the head of the National Foundation of Political Sciences (FNSP). Since 2022, Louis Schweitzer has also been vice-president of the Institut hospitalo-universitaire (IHU) Méditerranée Infection, in Marseille, where he notably led the process of replacing Didier Raoult.
